Originally called the Sinnissippi Forest, meaning "Rocky River," it is located in the Rock River Valley. This state forest has a total of 2,291 acres and is run by the Castle Rock State Park, which is located just across the Rock River. One of the most beautiful historic sites, the park is heavily wooded with hardwood and pine trees. There are a total of 22 miles of trails where you can hike or go cross country skiing. There is also a designated equestrian parking area and horse trails.

Castle Rock State Park is located on the west bank of the Rock River. It got its name from a sandstone bluff that is just adjacent to the river. The St. Peter sandstone is unique as there are only a few places in Illinois where this has come up to the surface, even though it lies under the whole state of Illinois. Three picnic areas with shelters, picnic tables, barbecue grills, drinking water, toilets and a playground can be found in the park, with one area overlooking the Rock River Valley. You can also go bank fishing, hunting, boating and hiking along six miles of marked trails. In winter, cross-country skiing and tobogganing are fun activities.

The White Pines Ranch is a place you can take your kids to while staying at an Oregon Bed and Breakfast. It is a 200-acre ranch designed for kids that has forests, horse trails and pastures.
