Located on the Chattahoochee River in White County, Helen is a small town that is famous for its various festivals all year around. Due to this long series of festivals, any Helen restaurant is always busy, especially during the months of September, October and November, when Helen celebrates its own version of the German Oktoberfest. BBOnline recommends the following restaurants: Hofer's Bakery and Cafe (low budget, German cuisine), Big Daddy's (medium budget, American, Italian and Mexican cuisines) and Nacooche Grill (fine dining, New American cuisine).
Hofer's Bakery and Cafe
8758 North Main Street
Helen, GA 30545
Owned and operated by German expats, Hofer's Bakery and Cafe opened for business in 1973, offering several baked goods, types of coffee and artisan breads. This bakery is a great choice for those visitors on a tight budget, because they will have several affordable options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This establishment also offers takeout service, so that you can take your order and enjoy it at your Helen Bed and Breakfast. Hofer's Bakery and Cafe prides itself on its German heritage and only offers four brands of imported German coffee: Tschibo, Sacher, Eduscho and Jacobs. The biggest claim to fame of this bakery is its appearance on the Food Network's 'The Secret Life of...Wedding Cakes,' where Hofer's wedding cakes were praised as some of the best in the United States.
If you're looking for an option to enjoy the Helen nightlife in an American tavern atmosphere with live music, then head to Big Daddy's. Established in 2003, this American tavern and music club showcases a different local music act every night. The wine and beer selection is very good. Big Daddy's showcases the micro brews from the Terrapin Beer Company of Athens, Georgia and several good reds and whites from France, the U.S., South America, Australia and South Africa. A local favorite appetizer is the Drunken Clams dish ($13.00), which features the Big Daddy Hot Sauce. A good vegetarian option is Momma's Tossed Salad ($10.00) with a delicious champagne vinaigrette dressing. If you're a fan of jumbo-sized wings, try to visit this Helen restaurant on Wednesday nights because the wings will be just $0.50 each.
Located just a short driving distance from more than one Helen Inn, the Nacooche Grill claims to be North Georgia's premier Live Wood Fire Grill. This is a great Helen restaurant destination for brunch because of it wide selection of eggs Benedict, sandwiches, wraps and other breakfast items. For lunch or dinner, the grill's BBQ Duck Quesadilla ($7.00) and their Nacooche Valley Crabcakes ($8.00) are great options to start off your meal with a bang. The build-your-own burger is a good option for an upscale burger experience. Finish off your meal with a sweet dessert such as the Homemade Creme Brulee or the Hot Butterscotch Brownie Sundae (both about $5.00). Reservations are highly recommended.
