BBOnline recommends joining this yearly celebration and understanding its importance. It's a lesson in fun.
Helen Oktoberfest: History
It was a logging town once - timber and land were cultivated; acres were stripped bare. And Helen flourished during the 19th century's industrial boom. But then times changed and the city fell, no longer able to sustain itself. There were no profits to be found or trades to make. There was only reinvention. In 1968 a massive construction project was began. The entire town was changed, made to resemble an alpine escape. Tourism, it was quickly decided, would be the much-needed salvation. And soon the concept of the Oktoberfest was born. Lumber was replaced by thrills. And, while the first attempt was met with dismal results, Helen's citizens continued on and soon gained the popularity they wanted.
Helen Oktoberfest: Events
Let the comforts of your Helen Inn ready you for happy days. Journey into town and be charmed by the cobbled streets and white-walled architecture. Watch Polka dancers play; taste Bavarian foods; follow the twists and turns of parade music. It makes for perfect afternoons. Let your evenings then be given to the Festhalle, a large complex in the center of Helen. There local bands will take the stage, piping songs and laughter. Heady brews are offered. It's a collection of flags and native costumes; all while set against the changing of the seasons. It will impress. And families need not fear: this is a pleasant atmosphere and has something for everyone. Children and adults are both welcomed.
Helen Oktoberfest: Information
It's all too easy to forget the practicalities. You dream of your Helen Bed and Breakfast and the adventures it will bring; but you ignore the necessities. Planning may seem to be a chore but it is vital here. BBOnline suggests reconciling what you want with what you must remember:
The Oktoberfest begins each year on September 9 and lasts until October 31. While this may seem enough weeks to revel in, you will still need to begin your planning early. All reservations should be made at least 3 months in advance. All inns, hotels and resort rooms will be filled when the season starts. You will need to act quickly. Groups are often offered discounts, however. Inquire to see if you apply. Remember also that the festival requires no charge on the main streets (beyond what you purchase from vendors). To enter the Festhalle, however, there is an admission fee: $7.00 Monday through Friday and $8.00 on Saturday. Sundays are free but tend to swell from the crowds. Schedule well.
The Helen Oktoberfest is an annual event that is not to be missed. With its old-world appeal and Georgia surroundings, it is the ultimate contrast; but such a rarity is welcomed among travelers. You will be satisfied.
