Explore Cleveland National Forest near Descanso

Located close to your Descanso Bed and Breakfast is Cleveland National Forest. President Theodore Roosevelt named this forest on July 1, 1908 when he signed the declaration combining the San Jacinto National Reserve and Trabuco Canyon National Reserve. This 460,000-acre forest is a natural playground with its hiking trails, observatories, picnic areas and exploration on horseback. Laguna Mountain Visitor's Information Center

Among the pines in the settlement of Mt. Laguna you will find the Laguna Mountain Visitor's Center. It has a variety of wildlife displays which children can even touch. There are mountain lions and foxes among the many displays and even one on how to count the age of a pine tree. If it's in the summer, come shade yourself; if it's the winter you can come warm yourself by the fire. Laguna Mountain Visitor's Information Center is a great first stop during your trip to Cleveland National Forest. You can purchase gifts, books and maps. It's located 10 miles north on Sunrise Highway and is open Fridays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Kwaaymii Nature Trail

Kwaaymii Nature Trail is around a half mile loop and should take less than 30 minutes to hike. This trail is accessed behind the Laguna Mountain Visitor's Information Center. The trail is considered easy for hiking and is available year around. The trail winds through a pine forest and the self guided interpretive trail's main emphasis is on the Kwaaymii legends and history.

Sunset Trail

BBOnline recommends hiking the Sunset Trail as it is among the favorites of those who've visited Cleveland National Forest. This trail can be hiked year round and is four miles one way, rated easy and is for hikers only. A mile and half into the hike you will reach Water of the Woods. This small reservoir is a wonderful place to look for small animal tracks. Around 3.5 miles you will reach Laguna Meadows and then the trail ends at Big Laguna Trail where you can continue on if you choose.

Wooded Hill Trail

Closely located to your Descanso Inn you will find the Wooded Hill Trail. This mile and a half figure-eight loop is for hikers only and takes around two hours. You can hike this trail year round and it is self guided, so pick up a map at the visitor's center. From the highest point in the Laguna Mountains on a clear day you'll have magnificent views of San Diego, Channel Islands and Point Loma is visible.
