Introduction

The Empress, an historic hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas invites you to imagine yourself stepping back in time as you enjoy the rich Victorian atmosphere. Imagine an evening in the family parlor at the Biltmore Estate, surrounded by luxurious antiques, the warmth of the fire draining away the tension of a busy corporate day, stretched out in your smoking jacket or Victorian dressing gown, and that special book you've been postponing for the "right time". Each luxurious bedchamber at The Empress conveys just such a feeling in your own private sitting area. Or imagine luxuriating in the "bath of the century" (19th that is) provided by a claw foot tub and the soft glow of long ago lighting. Perhaps the lure of the Inn's "secret" watchtower in the turret intrigues you.

Or imagine yourself as Scarlett, descending a magnificent double staircase made of walnut and cypress, lighted by the rainbow hues of a 64 square foot stained glass skylight. Delicious breakfast smells beckon you to leisurely dining served from the verandah or the formal dining room, resplendent with silver service and unrushed conversation, where true Southern hospitality is served, along with English crumpets. Queen Victoria would have nodded her approval. Imagine further, a 19th Century Drawing Room in patterned carpet, rich wood wainscoting back dropping a game table with a puzzle partially put together, drawing you to pull up that cozy chair and add the next piece.

The Hornibrook Mansion was completed in 1888 at the exorbitant cost of $20,000 and used exclusively Arkansas materials. Designed by Max Orlopp and Casper Kusener, it has been described in the National register of Historic Places as the best example of ornate Victorian Architecture in Arkansas and the most important existing example of Gothic Queen Anne style regionally. Its significance lies in the unique architectural features (divided stairway, 3 1/2 story corner tower, stained glass skylight, and octagonal shaped rooms), which create a massive structure representing late-nineteenth century architecture in its most flamboyant style.

The Empress, an Arkansas bed and breakfast, was lovingly totally restored in 1995 and the carriage house restored in 2005. All of our Little Rock, AR spa suite accommodations offer, Jacuzzis, aromatherapy steam sauna and state of the art spa amenities. All rooms provide cable TV, CD and tape players, separate sitting areas, luxury robes, fireplaces, phones, king or queen feather beds and come with a two course gourmet breakfast by candlelight. Two also offer multiple jet massage showers and footbaths. Of course, all provide our usual First Rate Service and exquisite décor.

The Majestic Suite Representing the Grandeur of 1930's Hollywood in our newly restored Carriage House. King high back bed with Crown canopy exudes the essence of stardom. Separate room with 1930's antique sofa and chairs, fireplace, mirrored Jacuzzi, spa bath with massage jet shower, aromatherapy, steam shower, foot bath. Blacks, taupe, white and elegant gold create the mystique of the 30's. $289/night
Victoria's Garden Suite All the charm and warmth of an Irish cottage overlooking a Romantic Heirloom Moonlight Garden in our newly restored Carriage House. The simplicity of a picket fence featherbed, two cozy rockers together in front of the fire, the peaceful view form the balcony and the trickling water of an ages old quartz fountain. Morning rays brighten a glorious spa bath with its homey touches of long ago. But the vision of the two of you in the Jacuzzi or double sized aromatherapy spa shower is the image branded in your mind forever! Queen size featherbed, fireplace, separate sitting area with matching wicker rockers. Garden views from balcony. Elegant sunny bath with couples steam shower, Jacuzzi, aromatherapy. $259/night
The James H. Hornibrook Room The exquisite original bedchamber, furnished with a rare 1880's Renaissance Revival Bedroom Suite (Featured on the cover of Victorian Decorating & Lifestyle Magazine). The romantic sitting area includes a fireplace with hand painted tile, and a verse from Milton's "L'Allegro", done by Mary Leicester Wagner for her brother. Nestle in a slipper Jacuzzi tub. Marble sink basin and "water closet" commode finish a room "bathed" in the soft glow of camellia pink and green. $259/night
John Edward Murray Room This tower room mini-suite boasts an antique Austrian king size bed in walnut with matching marble topped end tables and washstand with room side Victorian sink and Pullman bath with shower. Hues of gray-blue and brown lend this room an air of dignified serenity as the bed nestles behind portieres and tassels and overlooks the front fish pond with fountain. Victorian parlor settee and chair ring the fireplace for that quiet romantic getaway for two. $189/Night
The Washburn-Welch Room Escape to the solitude of this spacious octagonal room finished in shades of French Aubergine and green, complimented by a French walnut king sized bed, that can be converted to twin sized beds, and lace at the windows. Recall the treasures of a past era in the travel worn hump back trunk or curl up in a cozy Victorian settee. Explore a cherished history in the old family bible or reflect on a favorite psalm, a balm for the soul. The claw foot tub invites a soak, which would have been "sinfully" wasteful in 1820. $189/Night
The Petit Jean Room Filled with relics of military and sea regimen, the Petit Jean room reflects the strength required to leave family for a world unknown and the softness of the love that inspired the courage. Done in dark walnut, the ornately carved high backed Empire queen bed is in striking contrast to the romantic blues and whites of the sitting area and the room side marble sink and Pullman bath with shower. This is definitely a room for lovers. $159/Night
The Eliza Bertrand Cunningham Room A queen size four-poster bedstead graces this cozy room with Victorian love seat and chair sitting area. Light rose and violet create a warm and delicate feeling hard to achieve without 14' ceilings and dark oak antiques. Pedestal sink with shower in Pullman bath surrounded by a collection of seashells from a Victorian summer by the sea. $139/Night
