Introduction
Whether you want to get away from it all or get involved in some of the great events here in Florence, Alabama, The Veranda on Walnut is the bed & breakfast where you can do it all. Sit and relax by the Tennessee River, tour the University of North Alabama campus, take a carriage ride through downtown Florence, dance in the streets during the W.C. Handy Festival, golf and fish all day long, or do nothing at all besides relax. This is an area full of great choices.
Upon your arrival to The Veranda on Walnut, you will enter through an ivy-covered arch over the fleur-de-lis designed black wrought iron gate. This iron fence surrounds the entire front and side of our landscaped lawn. Linger on the covered front porch where you are surrounded by old-fashioned Jackson vine and Carolina Jasmine. And you can enjoy it all from a relaxing wicker swing or black wrought iron table and chairs while you have afternoon tea or early morning coffee.
You will be greeted by your innkeepers, Ron and Doris Ross, and you will be surrounded by beautiful antiques as you enter the foyer. Many guests before you have stood in this same spot to register for their special room upstairs.
The Veranda on Walnut Bed and Breakfast, built circa 1915, is a stately white-columned two-story with covered veranda above and covered porch below. This lovely home has been listed on the National Register of Historic places since 1976. We are located in the Walnut Street Historic District, which is just one of the many historic districts in Florence, Alabama. Florence is known as "The Renaissance City" and was named for Florence, Italy.
The Dining Room is where you will enjoy a scrumptious breakfast to start your day right as you stay at our unique bed and breakfast. Upon awakening you can smell the aromas of fresh ground brewed coffees. You will be treated to bacon, ham & sausage frying, homemade biscuits rising and browning, and homemade jam and jellies, fresh squeezed orange juices, homemade muffins - or try Ron's famous homemade Belgian waffles with strawberries or blueberries, topped off with fresh whipped cream.
After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll down the tree-lined sidewalks to take in all the historic homes. It will be a walk back in time that you will never forget.
