Introduction
Mauvila Mansion B&B will be temporarily closed this summer for remodeling. We expect to begin taking reservations again in September. Thank you for understanding.
Mobile’s famous Mauvila Mansion ... The 19th century Italianate home has been welcoming guests for well more than half a century – as an up scale boarding house, a fancy reception hall and now a bed & breakfast.
Mauvila Mansion captured the hearts of Mobilians during the decades that Trula Tanner ran the boarding house and offered a daily, home-cooked $3 lunch in the formal dining room. City residents still speak with great affection of the great food offered at the lively lunches, where strangers would sit together at the massive, antique dining tables.
Built in 1871, and expanded and restored numerous times, Mauvila has experienced the Mobile of many eras and classes. It has suffered the loss and tragedies of former owners, as well as shared in the joy of countless weddings, lavish parties and great comradery in the dining room.
For its first 60 years or so, the wealthy made their home here. In the 1930s, Mary Louise Hensley gave Mauvila its name and converted some of the porches into bathrooms to create luxurious suites for elderly relatives. Later, younger boarders with good references shared the house with Ms. Hensley’s family. At least one couple fell in love while courting on the wrap-around porch, and later married.
Whether you’re looking to explore historic Mobile, fall in love under the palms on the verandah on a sultry, southern night, or enjoy the fine food still served in the dining room, you’ll want to try Mauvila Mansion B&B.
We offer two guest rooms with private, attached baths. Spacious rooms boast high ceilings, large windows, a spectacular staircase and a mix of antique and comfortable contemporary furnishings. There’s a formal gentlemen’s parlor for socializing and, of course, the verandah.
