The state of Alabama was born in this area and it was from here that
she reached out and touched the stars.
The Northeast portion of Alabama is home to a town older than the
state itself. Even though technology has come to the city, Mooresville today
still has the feel of the town that was laid out almost two hundred years
ago. Presidents Andrew Johnson, James Garfield and William McKinley all have
ties to this spot in Alabama.
Huntsville is home to Alabama’s Constitution Village, where delegates
met in 1819 and drew up the documents for Alabama’s statehood. The city also
welcomes visitors to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center and Redstone Arsenal,
where Wernher von Braun and his colleagues developed the United States’ first
guided missiles and designed the rockets that took man to the moon.
And just as Alabama soared through space, residents and visitors can
soar with eagles at beautiful Lake Guntersville, where the birds spend the
winter and are even encouraged to stay year-round.
While some of the attractions in this area are man-made, others were
crafted by nature -- and she did some of her best work in the mountains that
dot the northeast part of Alabama. Little River Canyon in DeKalb County is
the deepest gorge east of the Rocky Mountains and contains the only river in
the United States that forms and flows on top of a mountain.
At one end of the river is Little River Falls. At the other is DeSoto
Falls. Both are breathtaking any time of year, but especially after the
spring rains.
Man has been discovering all that this part of the state has to offer
for thousands of years. That part of Alabama history is written at Russell
Cave, near Bridgeport, where Stone Age man made his home more than 9,000
years ago.
Of course, more modern pursuits beckon today. Cloudmont Ski Resort
offers golf in the summer and man-made snow for skiing in the winter. Fort
Payne offers a look at other piece of the state’s music legacy with a museum
devoted entirely to the group ALABAMA. Boaz and Scottsboro bring out the
shopper in every visitor with outlet centers where bargains abound and First
Monday Trade Days where a little bargaining always is welcome.
